Let’s make good on our promise to educate all students.

Why 1Oakland?

Founded in the belief that we must address the inequities that exist within our school system. 1Oakland is a campaign led by families, educators, and community leaders to urge and support our community to develop a unified system of public schools.

1Oakland envisions a public school system delivering a high-quality education for all students, no matter whether they attend a district-run or public charter school. Unified under a bold, citywide vision for excellence, this system of schools maximizes resources to school sites and prioritizes resources for our most underserved students. It provides schools and educators with the flexibility to meet diverse student needs and the freedom to create innovative new models that accelerate student learning.

1Oakland is a reality when:

Oakland’s elected school board and charter school boards ensure excellence and equity across all public schools;

All public schools contribute equitably to providing Oakland’s most underserved students an excellent education; and

All public schools have equitable access to public resources.

Our Wins

In June 2018, 1Oakland celebrated the passing of the Community of Schools Policy BP 6006 in which the OUSD board declared that “it is the Board’s categorical expectation that all education providers operating or desiring to operate school programs in Oakland – district or charter – as well as families, staff, community members and labor unions, will accept shared responsibility for the sustainability of our school system and embrace the idea that we: (i) do not operate in silos, (ii) are interdependent in our efforts to serve all students and families; and (iii) need to act with consideration of the larger community of schools.” The policy also directs the Superintendent to “develop a citywide plan that promotes the long-term sustainability of publicly-funded schools across Oakland that represent quality and equitable educational options.”

In March, the school board voted to adopt the Citywide Plan, a big step in the fight to address and tackle inequality in our school system. The plan was informed by over 35 research meetings; and 300 one-to-one meetings with our community members. We believe the Plan sets forth the path to come together and move forward towards a unified system of public schools that holds both district and charter leaders accountable for increasing quality, equity, and sustainability.

1Oakland launches in September 2017 to work for a more cohesive, equitable, and sustainable education system.

Collective call to action launched to rally together to move from battle ground to the common ground.

Leaders in Oakland schools propose the Community of Schools plan. This plan builds on previous work and aims to deliver on the commitment that every single child in our city deserves a quality education regardless of where they live.

In June 2018, the Community of Schools Policy passes. The policy is a result of many community members across our city engaging in difficult conversations, surfacing our greatest fears and the tensions we feel.
