YES on G1: An Opportunity for Oakland Students and Educators

One of GO Public Schools Oakland’s values is community. Together, we are ALL responsible for preparing Oakland’s students for success. This November we, as a community, have the opportunity to help keep our educator talent in Oakland by providing a much needed raise, and give our middle school students a well-rounded education that includes the arts.

Included on the November 8, 2016 ballot is Measure G1, a $120 per parcel tax that would:

  • Provide an approximate 2 percent raise for all school site educators
  • Give about $250,000 to middle schools for enhancing art, music, and world language programs

As a former teacher at Westlake Middle School, I support G1 because I saw first hand how an art or music class could be the bright spot in a struggling student’s tough day. I also witnessed colleagues leave Oakland to teach in other districts, or leave teaching altogether, because they were unable to support their families.

Measure G1 is a step in the right direction because it gives our educators a raise and ensures equitable conditions for all middle school students across our city.

It is true and right that we must focus on getting our leaders in Sacramento to make the education budget reflect how much we value education. The problem is TIME – what do we do for students now while also building a foundation for future students? We have to do whatever it takes to make sure the students of Oakland have stellar education opportunities, and that starts with a yes vote for Measure G1.

As a former OUSD teacher, an Oakland resident, and a mother, I am voting yes on G1. I have to take a chance for my community. My former colleagues, my former students, and my family deserve it. Take a chance too, and join me! Vote yes on Measure G1.
