1). Professional Culture
Asian Pacific Islander and Latina/o Achievement
The Board will vote whether to approve job descriptions for two new positions: Director of Asian Pacific Islander Achievement and Director of Latina/Latino Achievement. These positions will lead listening campaigns that will inform the creation of new offices of Asian Pacific Islander Achievement and Latina/Latino Achievement.
2). Quality Schools Development
Prospective Merger – MLK Jr. Elementary and Lafayette Elementary
The District is recommending a two-phase merger. In 2017-18, MLK Jr. Elementary and Lafayette Elementary would be merged into one school on two campuses. One school site would have grades PK-3 and the other site would house grades 4-5. The District hopes to build on MLK’s academic growth and Lafayette’s after-school programming to improve services and education for students currently at the two schools.
Phase II in 2019-20 would fold West Oakland Middle School into the newly formed school. This would create one school with PK-3 at one site and grades 4-8 at another site. This program would feed into McClymonds High.
For more details on the community engagement and merger process and to learn what services will be available at the different school sites, check out the presentation here.
Enrollment Impact Analysis and Enrollment Stabilization Plan
Less than projected enrollment is expected to result in a $5.5M budget reduction for 2017-18.
The Board will hear a resolution that directs the Superintendent or designee to submit anEnrollment Impact Analysis any time the Board is considering business that could impact District enrollment, including: opening/closing/expansion of District-run or charter schools, changes in transportation, site relocations, and changes in enrollment systems.
The Board will also hear a resolution that directs the Superintendent or designee to submit an Enrollment Stabilization Plan within 180 days. This plan would incorporate related bodies of work, including: school portfolio planning, charter school management, facilities planning, feeder patterns, and the enrollment process/system.
