Measure G1: Meet the 5-person Oversight Committee
On April 12th, 2017 the school board named the five person Measure G1 oversight committee.
The oversight committee will be responsible for advising the school board in three areas:
- Making sure that Measure G1 funds are used as the parcel tax intended
- Reviewing annual and independent audit reports
- Making recommendations to the school board about policies and regulations that will support the implementation and compliance of G1 funds
The school board accepted applications for the oversight committee from February 15th, 2017 through March 15th, 2017. The school board named the following criteria for oversight committee member selection: “Giving membership preference to persons who demonstrate extensive knowledge and expertise in middle school education, with a focus on arts, music, and world languages, school safety, and in compensation for K-12 educational professionals.”
The following members of the committee were announced at the school board meeting on April 12th:
Appointee Initial Term
Jill Habig 2 YEARS – April 16, 2017 through April 15, 2019
Monique Adorno-Jimenez 1 YEAR – April 16, 2017 through April 15, 2018
Susan Walton 2 YEARS – April 16, 2017 through April 15, 2019
Jonathan Osler 1 YEAR – April 16, 2017 through April 15, 2018
Misha Karigaca 2 YEARS – April 16, 2017 through April 15, 2019
The next steps for the oversight committee is to begin working with the school board and district staff around fund distribution and measure implementation. The committee is starting after school sites have been given initial guidance for their site planning and the district has started developing a plan for implementing the staff raise component of the measure. Additionally, the committee will need to quickly determine the similarities and differences between G1 implementation as it relates to OUSD schools, OUSD approved charter schools, and Alameda County approved Oakland charter schools.
At GO Public Schools Oakland, we look forward to the impact of a salary increase for educator staff and increased safety and/or enrichment opportunities for all Oakland middle school students. We deeply appreciate all of those who applied to serve on the G1 oversight committee and extend our gratitude to the five selected members for their dedication to ensuring the successful implementation of the G1 parcel tax funds.
