It is my honor to kick off the 2018-2019 school year with you and all of Oakland’s educators! Thank you all for everything you do for Oakland students and families.
In this issue of the GO Oakland Educator Newsletter, you’ll find news about the teacher contract negotiations impasse process, GO Teacher Policy Fellows, and the Contract Matters: What’s the status of teacher contract bargaining?
In May, the teachers’ union (OEA) declared impasse in their contract negotiations with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
Impasse means that at least one side of negotiators believes they are deadlocked and will not be able to reach an agreement. The Public Employees Relation Board (PERB) has agreed to begin the process of impasse and has appointed a mediator to help OUSD and OEA come to a tentative agreement. To help everyone understand what the impasse process will look like this fall, we’ve created this infographic that lays out the process and a rough timeline.
The first mediation session will be on August 31. Mediation does not have a specific timeline and can end two ways: 1. The OUSD and OEA could come to a tentative agreement on the next contract. 2. Either party, or the mediator, could decide that mediation is not working and then send the case to fact-finding. Check out more on this process in the infographic!
We’ll make sure to update you as we learn more.
GO Teacher Policy Fellows are Doing Big Things!
The Members of Cohort 5 of the Teacher Policy Fellowship are now entering the second and final year of their fellowship. They are now leaders in the 1Oakland and Budgeting for Impact teams and have continued to have an impact through the summer.
In July, Caitlin and Edgar published an op-ed in the East Bay Times celebrating the passing of the Community of Schools policy and the promise of collaboration between district-run and charter-run public schools.
A few fellows have also made some career moves this summer, becoming school leaders, teacher coaches, and school operations managers. A HUGE thank you and well wishes to Edgar, Leah, Mallory, Michael, and Stephanie as they leave the Teacher Policy Fellowship to make space for their new work!
Email me at email@example.com if you’d like to grab coffee and get involved in this important work!
