Remembering Dirk Tillotson

This weekend, Oakland suffered the immeasurable loss of Dirk Tillotson – father, son, husband, friend, and fierce advocate for education equity. Words cannot begin to express the magnitude of Dirk’s life and work. We’ve lost a pillar, a moral compass, and for us at GO, we’ve lost a friend.

A movement-builder, an unapologetic advocate, and a talented writer, Dirk had a way with words. He wielded them to demand the schools and school systems that every student deserves. Only Dirk’s own words can capture his passion, humor, and dedication – you can read his words here

We extend our deepest condolences to Dirk’s wife Amina, his son Malcom, his family, friends, and the many countless lives he touched. Great School Choices, the non-profit that Dirk launched to ensure underserved families and students, especially Black families and other families of color, have greater access to quality schools, has launched a GoFundMe to support his wife and his son. If you can, we encourage you to support them in this difficult time.

Let us remember Dirk and recommit to living in his legacy.
