Jess is finishing her second year teaching in Oakland and teaches first grade at Learning Without Limits in the Fruitvale district. She received her Master’s in Elementary Education from UC Berkeley and is excited to work with GO to further support all Oakland students.
Why public education?
I have attended public school my entire life – from kindergarten to graduate school. My mom has been a public school teacher for over 20 years, and these were the communities that enabled me to grow and learn. Because of this, I am inspired to provide an empowering learning community for my students everyday.
After attending college at UC Berkeley, I left the Bay Area for a few years, only to return to Cal for graduate school. I moved to Oakland soon after beginning my teaching career. Oakland is full of pride, and it can be seen from the A’s games at the Coliseum to the drum circles by Lake Merritt. There is something here for everyone, and I am now fully rooted in Oakland.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr. Seuss’ timeless words inspire me to continue advocating for change within my community. This change takes cooperation, dedication, and care.
