Why I GO
"Education is the one real opportunity to change your trajectory in life. It's the single best lever to remap your road. Every single child deserves the best that education has to offer. It's our community's job (read responsibility) to make that real for Oakland public schools and the kids they serve."

Why public education?

During eighth grade, I remember talking to a counselor about my high school schedule for the following year. My parents had successfully advocated for me to take honors classes. As I was leaving, I overheard the next student, who really liked writing and wanted to take honors English, being told they couldn’t take the class they wanted. I remember how upset I was by that, and it made me reflect on my parents’ ability to advocate for me. But, what about that student who was told no? What an injustice.

Why Oakland?

I used to think where you were from meant where you were born and I would always say Cambridge, until I moved to Oakland. This is my family’s home because of the community and the people. I think of that tree and its roots and I feel a strong connection to all things Oakland. The food, running the lake, and the people.

What are your vices?

Game of Thrones. I am obsessed and binged watched the first five seasons in a month.
