Breaking Down the OUSD State Relief Bill

On Monday September 17, Governor Jerry Brown signed Education Trailer Bill AB1840.

The headline for this bill is that the state will be providing OUSD with $30 million over three years to help spread out the pain of the district cutting that entire amount all at once. This money is not a loan, but does come with the expectation that OUSD will continue making improvements on overall budgeting and not need more relief in the future. We put together a quick video explaining the bill—check it out and read the details below.

OUSD Budget Update: Second Interim Financial Report

Last night, the Oakland Unified Board of Education heard a series of reports on the district’s finances. Overall, the district’s finances have moved in the right direction, but are still far from being on solid footing.

Educator Perspective: GO’s Budgeting for Impact Event
As a former Oakland kindergarten teacher who’s now working to increase funding for early childhood supports, I care deeply about how OUSD is managing its limited resources in service of students. To catch up on the latest, last week I attended GO’s Winter Networking Event: Budgeting for Impact, which brought a diverse group of teachers, parents, students, advocates, current and former policymakers, and community members together to delve into the OUSD budget, analyze the root causes and broader context of the on-going challenges, and explore possibilities for a path forward.
